Sourpuss June Featured Retailer: Lana Rose!

What is your name, and what is your job title at LANA-ROSE?
Hey there! My name is Lana Lunacy and my job here at Lana-Rose Fashion is being our Social media manager, in charge of all our social media pages, events and making the store look good visually! I also won the title of Psychobilly Queen in 2015 down in Melbourne (Photo attached) and currently performing Burlesque professionally in Ballarat and Melbourne.

Tell us more about Lana-Rose Fashion! When did you open and what’s changed since then?
We are a family owned and operated store, Inspired from the first time we tried on rockabilly clothing ourselves in 2010, We loved the style and culture so much, My mother Tracey (Owner and Manager) decided Ballarat needed a vintage inspired store to match the Heritage of the town. So on the 8th of August 2012, Lana-Rose Fashion was registered for business! Named after myself and my younger sister Rose. For the last 5 year we have seen our little town embrace its own history and celebrate with Festivals and weekend events all year round, men and women alike dressing more in the vintage inspired fashions day to day and our town is really being put on the map for all of this combined!

What did you do before LANA-ROSE?
I started my working career in retail, working for chain/department stores when I was younger, I worked at a Comic Book store for 3 years as well, a Teenage nerd’s dream! But I was lucky enough to come straight out of high school to be in the shop. I’ve also been in the performing arts from a young age, and now perform Burlesque professionally! Which absolutely goes hand and hand with the rockabilly culture.

What’s the best part about your job?
It’s always seeing the look on someone’s face when they try on something they instantly love. Whether it’s someone who is in the culture and finds the perfect dress or someone try the rockabilly fashion for the first time, I love seeing someone who finds an item that suits them to a T, making them happy and comfortable expressing themselves through fashion.

What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?
Oh my gosh, so, across the street from our shop on Lydiard street is a burger bar called ‘Griffin Burger’, They make The Best burgers in town! They name the burgers after pop culture references like ‘Djion Travolta’, They are delicious and such a temptation being so close to us.

What is the most important appliance in your home?
Probably my Hair Curler, I hate not having Drag Queen worth big hair every day!

Do you have any irrational fears?
I always fear a freak eyeball accident. I had Lasik eye surgery to not wear glasses anymore and now I fear flying scissors or tripping with a knife and ending up in such a position it would end up in my eyeballs. Or tripping with a glass cup and it is breaking and slamming it into my eyeballs. Eyeballs man, totally not irrational!

Do you like Sci-Fi movies?
Not to sound Australian But MATE, I love Sci-fi movies. My parents raised me on Star Wars, X-Files, Alien, Predator, Evil Dead, Plan 9 from Outer Space, But I have to say Mad Max Fury Road is my favourite. I was born in Broken Hill where the first Mad Max was filmed, Definitely holds a special place in my heart.

Have you ever ridden a camel?
No I haven’t, but I was in a production of ‘The Boy from Oz’ based on Peter Allen’s life, and for the finale’ of ‘Rio’, A camel was brought on stage with the cast In The Theatre!

Sourpuss Featured Retailer: Cobalt Heights!

What is your name, and what is your job title at Cobalt Heights?
Hi Guys! My name is Sian (Pronounced “Sharn” – Im half Welsh and its a nightmare!) Francis and I am the Owner / Operator / Rubbish Bin Emptier at Cobalt Heights. I’m a one woman operation so I do everything from the buying to the boring accounting.

Tell us more about Cobalt Heights! When did you open and what’s changed since then?
Cobalt Heights was formed in 2011 after the birth of my first son. He was one of those fabled “Dream Babies”….. you know the kind that sleep all night and behave themselves during the day? I was bored. I started out small, initially we sold costume jewellery, by 2013 I decided to start venturing into handbags and wallets (my true love) and our range has gradually expanded to include clothing and shoes as well. We prefer to stick to the “alternative” side of thing and I often describe our range as “Pretty/Creepy”, preferring to leave the demure florals and whimsical prints to the girls who do it so much better. Give me skulls and zombies over pansies and daisies any day!  Sourpuss was one of our first suppliers to come on board and I’m super proud to be a New Zealand stockist of their amazing range.

**Disclaimer – Before you start hating, my second child? Total opposite to his big brother. I am the proud owner of a dream baby and a devil baby. The universe has a funny way of arranging these things.

What did you do before Cobalt Heights ?
I have always enjoyed working with people. I left school around 16 and held various jobs in retail stores during the day and waitressing after hours. Prior to having my children I was selling new and used vehicles for a prestigious brand here in New Zealand. It was an exciting and challenging job, one that I really enjoyed and one that I like to think I was quite good at. Unfortunately it isn’t really a “family friendly” career and once my first son was born I knew deep down that it would be a long time before I returned to work outside of the home.

What’s the best part about your job?
THE PRETTIES! I am a total handbag whore and ordering and opening new stock never gets old. We are very active in the show and expo scene here in New Zealand and attend all of the major shows like Beach Hop, The Tattoo Expos, Armageddon and The Very Vintage Day Out as well as a bunch of smaller markets and shows throughout the North Island. I love nothing more than getting out into the real world and meeting up with new and old customers. Bonus points for the fact that I no longer have to worry about visible tattoos and piercings (and as a result have assembled quite an impressive collection of both in the last 5-6 years) .

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Eeek! Im a little naughty. Most days I forgo breakfast in favor of around 20 cups of tea (English Breakfast, Milk, No Sugar). However, on occasion I will make a full fry up my bitch – Mushrooms are my fave!

What is the most important appliance in your home?
Hands down, my cell phone charger! Oven not needed if I can order pizza.

Do you have any irrational fears?
I keep and occasionally breed tropical fish…..But I am terrified of fish in the water if I’m in the water with them. I like aquariums etc but scuba diving? NOPE!

Do you like Sci-Fi movies?
-If yes-What’s your favorite?
-If no-What would you rather watch?
Do zombies count as Sci-Fi? If so then YUP! Im also really into apocalyptic end of the world stuff too. Its been a long time since I’ve watched a good movie but I’m a big TV binger. At the moment I am currently working my way through The 100 but The Walking Dead is my fave show in the whole world!

Have you ever ridden an elephant?
No, I haven’t and to be totally honest even if I was presented with the opportunity to do so I would say no. I feel sorry for the poor little guys.

What are you most excited about in the coming months? (Feel free to answer for yourself or for
Cobalt Heights )
This year we have 2 exciting new events we will vending at. The first is Armageddon in Auckland which is our equivalent to “Comic-Con”. The second is The Very Vintage Day Out. They are being held back to back, one weekend after the other in October this year and its going to be crazy! Cobalt Heights will NOT be f*cking around and I plan to bring our A Game to both shows.

Anything we forgot to ask?
Nope, I think we are good. I would like to add though that I am very thankful for the opportunity to be a featured retailer, it was such an honor to be asked. Sourpuss is one of our core brands at Cobalt Heights and that’s something that will never change. Over the coming months we will have new and exciting stock arriving all the time.

Sourpuss Featured Retailer: Dead Rockers!

What is your name, and what is your job title at Dead Rockers?

My name is Lindsay Shaver, Owner aka Boss Lady

Tell us more about Dead Rockers! When did you open and what’s changed since then?

DeadRockers was created in 2005, when many of the punk rock clothing and music shops in Southern California were disappearing. I decided to take matters into my own hands at the age of 18. I had just graduated high school, and began selling merch at local gigs, car shows, roller derby bouts, and anywhere else that would let me set up shop! I started selling online through our MySpace page and launched our first website the next year. In 2011, I opened my first physical retail location in Wilmington, CA. A few years later we got the opportunity to move to the infamous 4th Street, in downtown Long Beach, where we currently reside and LOVE! Earlier this year we moved next door into an even larger location. What once was a small table in the corner at a local punk show selling band merch and music has grown to become an 800 sq. ft. retail shop and online store carrying thousands of products from all over the world. Everything from patches and studs, to shower curtains, dresses, & kitschy housewares! The last few years Dead Rockers has grown tremendously, and it has been such a rad experience to watch my teenage dreams unfold!

What did you do before Dead Rockers?

I managed a hair salon & did office accounting work for a manufacturing company.

What’s the best part about your job?

I love seeing customers light up when they find something they have never seen or heard before. Especially young kids who get stoked on finding a band shirt or patch they have been searching for, or an album they’ve been saving up cash to buy. Talking about music and meeting people from around the world is an equally awesome part. I had a lady come by the shop recently who was visiting from the Netherlands and her daughter had given her a list of things she wanted to buy from Dead Rockers, that totally made my day! To be included as a stop on people’s travel list is one of the most rewarding feelings ever.

What is your favorite thing to drink when out with friends?

I love the bubbly! It’s been a sort of motto of mine, “No troubles, just bubbles”, I even got it tattooed. I recently discovered Sparkling Sake…AMAZING. I also love spicy Bloody Marys with lots of pickled accoutrement!

What is your favorite smell?

I love lavender & citrus smells, especially in candles. I also love the smell of fresh glossy postcards and printed material, if you see my sniffing a box of business cards, now you know why.

Do you have any irrational fears?

Snakes! And eels, anything slithery without legs really. I can’t even walk down the reptile aisle in stores!

Do you like horror movies?

Yes! All kinds, old and new

Have you ever fed an elephant?

No, but I’d love to! I’ve been up close and petted one once; their hair feels like wire!

What are you most excited about in the coming months?

I’m heading to Chicago for the first time ever, to catch the Original Misfits reuniting for Riot Fest! Also excited for some Deep Dish pizza, and to catch a game at Wrigley Stadium while out there. We also have some exciting things in the works for the shop including a Halloween Art Show & new custom built furniture that we will be offering (think coffin book shelves & studded record displays!).

Keep up with Dead Rockers here:

Sourpuss December Feat. Retailer: Collectif!

Collectif_Blogpost_1Who are you, and what is your job title at Collectif ?
My name’s Siobhan, and I’m Marketing Manager and Accessories Buyer at Collectif.

Tell us more about Collectif! When did you open and what’s changed since then?
The brand started in the year 2000, and more or less everything has changed since then! We began as a market stall in Camden Stables Market selling alternative clothing, and now we have two brands that both release seasonal collections bi-annually! We’ve grown in size in a huge way, and we now have over 50 members of staff worldwide. This year, we even managed to win the Drapers Independent Award for Best Niche Fashion Retailer of the Year, so you could say that we’ve come a long way.

What did you do before you were at Collectif?
I actually used to work in film for a while, mainly working in Special Effects and Costume. Before this I’d just graduated uni, where I studied Technical Arts and Special Effects for Screen.

What’s the best part about your job?
The fact that I work with a lot of likeminded people who are great friends as well as colleagues.

What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?
If we’re talking on a Sunday, it has to be a full on roast dinner with all of the trimmings. Rest of the time? Nothing beats a nice big bowl of chunky soup with a crusty roll.

What is the most important appliance in your home?
Has to be a mix of my MacBook or the 3DTV. Maybe both.

Do you have any irrational fears?
Cotton wool freaks me out in a big way- especially when it’s rubbed together. Foil too, when it’s compacted together. The sound of polystyrene. I could go on.

Do you like Sci-Fi movies?
In short, YES.

What’s your favorite?
Has to be Alien if you’re going for old school classic. Hands down. Though the new Star Treks are pretty good, as is Interstellar. I’m more of a Fantasy geek, though!

Have you ever ridden a camel?
Can’t say that I have!

What are you most excited about in the coming months?  (Feel free to answer for yourself or for Collectif )
For Collectif? We’re in the process of opening a brand new store in Camden, so we can’t wait to get that open.   For me? CHRISTMAS! And er… Hobbitcon in April.

Sourpuss Featured Retailer: 23 Skidoo!

23_Skidoo_PromoWhat is your name and job title at 23 Skidoo?
I’m Sandi, and I am the owner, top dog, head honcho, big cheese, mama bear at 23 Skidoo.

Tell us more about 23 Skidoo ! When did you open and what’s changed since then?
I opened 23 Skidoo in August, 2001. In the beginning, we were a strictly vintage clothing store. Around 2005ish, we started carrying new/retro/vintage inspired stuff, and have grown like crazy! The town we are in, Campbell, has also grown from a very small-town style community to a bustling little downtown. The customers now are more aware of vintage/retro, thanks to a revival of pinup and shows like Mad Men. There’s definitely more of a demand for vintage/retro for every day wear, whereas before it was more of a specialty market.

What did you do before 23 Skidoo ?
I’ve done lots of things… I actually still have a job part time as a unit assistant in an ER, but I also worked in veterinary clinics for over 15 years. Strange transition, I know! I’ve always loved vintage clothes and awesome style, and one day just kinda thought, “I wanna open a cool store” and here you have it!

What’s the best part about your job?
Other than getting first pick at the awesome clothes, you mean? 😀
Happy customers!! When you get a shy gal who isn’t sure about trying on a dress because she might be insecure, but she tries it on anyway and sees how amazing it looks… Her face brightens up, she gets excited about how beautiful she really is. It’s a great feeling.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Peanut butter and cheese on toast.

What is the most important appliance in your home? Why?
My stove. It’s from the late 30’s and has not only grilling instructions, but a baking chart painted inside the oven doors. For someone like me, who can’t cook, and doesn’t like using books or online recipes, those instructions are life savers.

Do you have any irrational fears?
Answering questions for clothing companies. 😉

Do you like Sci-Fi movies?
I love Star Trek all day long. Metropolis and Alien are also in my top 3. Oh and Star Wars. And.. and… (Don’t make me pick just 12!)

Have you ever ridden an elephant?
No. But I feel sorry for the guys who clean up their poop.

What are you most excited about in the coming months?  (Feel free to answer for yourself or for 23 Skidoo)
We have some really fun upcoming events we will be styling/sponsoring, and doing some great photo shoots to update our website. Plus, LOTS of new items will be coming in.

Anything we forgot to ask?
you didn’t ask about cats. CATS ARE AWESOME.
